Convince them of the acceptability of the stunned alternatives - if necessary with a baseball bat

'Dying in fear and pain': Vet calls for religious slaughter of animals to be stopped

The practice, allowed under law to satisfy Jewish and Muslim rules, must not cause unnecessary suffering

A veterinary professor tonight demanded an end to the ritual slaughter of animals in abattoirs.
Bill Reilly said two million are dying in agony every year because they are not stunned first.
The practice, allowed under law to satisfy Jewish and Muslim rules, must not cause unnecessary suffering.
But Prof Reilly, past president of the British Veterinary Association, said the animals die in great pain and called for action to curb, if not halt, slaughter without stunning.
He also suggested some abattoirs do it to save cash, with the meat going to the secular market.
Prof Reilly said: “It isn’t acceptable and if we can’t eliminate non-stunning we need to keep it to the minimum.”
Prof Reilly wanted to see wider adoption of the “three Rs” (Replace, Reduce and Refine) principle applied to the use of animals in medical research.
This would mean conducting an on-going dialogue to persuade religious communities that stunning animals before slaughter actually does comply with their religious texts.
Such an approach had already been successfully achieved in New Zealand, which has a large Halal export market, yet requires all its animals to be stunned.
Prof Reilly wrote: “In my view, the current situation is not acceptable and, if we cannot eliminate non-stunning, we need to keep it to the minimum.
“This means restricting the use of Halal and Kosher meat to those communities that require it for their religious beliefs and, where possible, convincing them of the acceptability of the stunned alternatives.”
Much of the religious slaughter is poultry for Jewish Kosher meals.  Muslim Halal meat makes up a quarter of the UK market.
